Client Prep Guide – Family Portraits

WE’RE SUPER EXCITED ABOUT OUR UPCOMING FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION. TO ENSURE WE CAPTURE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS – THOSE CLASSIC POSED SHOTS AND THE HEARTWARMING, GENUINE MOMENTS please take a few minutes to review our top tips.

HERE’S 8 QUICK TIPS TO PREP FOR THE SESSION:

WARDROBE

POSING

  • Expect some traditional poses that showcase your family’s beautiful connection. Think timeless and classic shots that you can cherish for years to come. I’ll guide you the entire time! No more worrying about what to do with your hands.
  • Some of the most cherished photos happen when you least expect it though. Embrace the candid moments, and we’ll make sure to catch them on camera.

PROMPTS

  • We’ll throw in some prompts to evoke those natural, authentic reactions. It could be something as simple as a tickle fight, a quick dance party, or sharing a funny family story. These prompts help create images that feel as real as your love for each other.
  • Anything that the kids really enjoy would be great for me to know ahead of time so I can bring it up – that usually creates a great big grin!

WHEN & WHERE

  • Chances are your session is scheduled about an hour before sunset and at one of my designated locations that I shoot at. This is to ensure we get images that have a gorgeous background to compliment your family & great golden hour lighting. So just be sure that you arrive on time, or even a few minutes early to ensure there are no hiccups.

CHILDREN

  • Lets let the little ones be little, they’re only like this for a season and its my goal to document that inocence while its still present.
  • Do not bribe your children with candy or snacks – instead, talk about how much FUN your session is going to be starting 2 weeks prior to the session. Let them know you’re going to play games, make each other laugh and make a lot of memories together. Believe it or not, what kids want most is our attention, and this will usually do the trick to prepare them well!

EXT. FAMILY

  • Prior to your session please send me a detailed list of all of the different family groupings you’d like to have photographed with names to ensure that we can get everyone photographed in a timely manner and still have time for some candid shots.
  • Outfit coordination is also very important, so dont forget to send me everyones wardrobe choices prior to your session.

IN ADVANCE

  • If there are any family dynamics or anything that would be helpful for me to know prior to the session – please communicate that with me.
  • If there are things you or someone in your family is self conscious of, please make me aware prior to the session so I can take it in to consideration with posing.
  • Please send me a list of all names & ages of everyone being photographed.

YOUR VIBE

  • It’s SO important for you to be the thermostat for this session & set the temperature. I know these things can be stressful if we let them – but I promise, the more calm & patient you are, the better it is for everyone. Don’t worry about telling the kids to look at me and smile, I will take care of that. Just be present in the moment and I will capture all the beauty. You’ll truly be surprised at simple it can be when you’re relaxed.
